Deciphering the alphabet soup of financial terms

November 10, 2020

If you’re new to investing or know someone who is, chances are you’ll start and then immediately feel like you’re drowning in the vocabulary alone. And I’m not just referring to the hundreds of financial abbreviations and acronyms that look like alphabet soup. There are terms for every type of investment tool and financial decision you can think of and without a crash course in Finance 101, you may find yourself spending countless hours Googling every single definition.

To make it easier, here are two websites you can use as cheat sheets for investing terminology. TheBalance.com offers Investment Terms Everyone Should Know as an introduction to the most commonly used terms and topics, with links to even more detailed information. Next, take a look at TheMotleyFool.com’s cheat sheet for What Do All Those Investing Acronyms Mean? While a handful of these may ring a bell, the majority will undoubtedly be new.

If you come across a website with an even better summary of terms or acronyms, I’d love for you to share it with me!
